Pastel Immersion

Beginners to advanced pastel artists build their mastery of expression using traditional soft pastels and combine these with the new medium of pan pastels. Participants learn and experiment with new techniques through short exercises and produce a notable finished piece during the workshop. The workshop includes group demonstrations and encourages students to explore their unique areas of interests. Also, it strengthens their understanding of color theory and the application of pastels to diverse subject matters including landscape, still life, and portraits. All materials are included in the Materials Fee of $18 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the workshop. Bring a brown bag lunch.

Focus on the Fundamentals of Painting

Composition, form, value, and brushstroke: These fundamentals are universal across all mediums and styles. Learning them will make you a well rounded and versatile artist. In each of the first four classes we focus on one of these fundamentals working on small paintings and exercises to master the concepts. During the last two classes students will further explore those fundamentals that are of most interest to them. The course is geared to those willing to try new approaches in a relaxed environment with plenty of one on one instruction.

Gesture Drawing

The cornerstone of excellent drawing, gesture is the basis, for all good drawings and paintings. This workshop is designed to improve student’s visual instincts to fully grasp their subject matter, be they a still life, landscape, figures, or anything else. Students will learn and practice how to sharpen their eyes to capture their subject’s basic forms, proportions, shapes, emotion, and movement. As an artist, you will find that gestural drawing is rather freeing. It is a form of expression that is neither abstract nor realistic. It is, quite simply, a quick sketch in which your hand follows your eyes. Bring a brown bag lunch. Supply List available on www.spruillarts.org.
